Hampton Roads Midwifery

I think of myself as an instrument; as a gift I have to share with women and their babies. That when my knowledge and skills are needed, they are there for women and their babies to use them and benefit from them. I am a very traditionally-minded home birth midwife. In addition to homebirths, I also attend births at The Village Midwife birth center. I also am a HypnoBirthing Professional Labor Companion.

My passion is in capturing new life and all the changes it brings, from pregnancy and birth to a woman becoming a mother and a couple becoming a family.

My awe for birth and laboring women further grew while documenting the miraculous journey to motherhood. In 2017 I decided to start training as a doula and expand my offerings to include birth support. I think that women in pregnancy and birth are the most gorgeous and powerful example of the human race. I believe every women should be supported in such a way as to feel loved, respected, nourished, and esteemed during birth

Birth Doula
Prior to birth, meet with a woman or couple 2 or 3 times to build connection and rapport as we discuss expectations, goals and even fears. My role is non-medical, offering encouragement, education and resources. We practice comfort techniques; learning how/where she carries tension prior to the onset of labor building self-confidence and harmony.

My “on call” period is 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after estimated due date and clients can call or text with questions or updates any time. When labor starts, they contact me. Once with an actively laboring client, I will stay with her, providing support until she has given birth.

After baby is born, I will encourage family intimacy and can assist with initial breast-feeding if desiredbut then withdraw when they are comfortably tucked in and ready for some rest.

Postpartum Doula
I meet with clients before their baby is born to discuss anticipated needs; how often and for how long will need my help. After their baby’s birth, they contact me to set up their first block of time.
I may typically be asked to do as a postpartum doula:

Help mom process the birth, newborn care and nursing cues, caring for baby so parent can shower/nap/spend time with other children, tidy around the house, errands, start the laundry, make some lunch for mom, or just a cup of tea and listen…

Recognizing “normal” allows me to help with newborn care and breastfeeding and be another set of experienced hands that can help in taking some pressure off during this time of enormous transition.

Women are made to have children. Our bodies are fearfully & wonderfully made, and if you are a healthy woman, having a home or cottage birth is a great choice for your pregnancy care!

Oftentimes our culture paints a picture of birth as a broken system in our bodies, needing to be fixed. This is not true. Birth works best when left unhindered in the comfort of your own home. Your body is able to relax, and let go – and do the work that is called “labor”. I am there to guard your space and have a watchful eye and make sure that all is going well and you and baby remain safe.

We are located in Strasburg, Virginia. We serve women along Interstate 81 (north and south), up to an hour and half distance from my home. We are covering most of North Shenandoah Valley including Winchester, Woodstock, Front Royal, Berryville, and anywhere in-between! Exceptions are made on occasion.
