Charlottesville Chapter Director: Priya Curtis
How and when Priya got involved with Birth Matters Virginia
I first became involved with Birth Matters in 2008, as a pregnant mama looking for information and support for low-intervention birth options. Birth Circle was not only a crucial part of my prenatal education, but also provided a supportive community I would not have otherwise had, before or after I gave birth. After my son was born, I continued to attend Birth Circle each month, eventually volunteering to help host educational activities. In 2011, I joined the Coordinating Board, representing the Charlottesville Chapter. It has been my privilege to serve in this capacity since then, and to serve my community “on the ground” as a Birth Circle facilitator.
Highlights of the Charlottesville Chapter activities in 2014
In 2014, the Charlottesville chapter hosted numerous events, including monthly Birth Circles, a Couples Birth Circle, community picnics, Comfort Measures nights with local doulas, a panel discussion about resources for support during the immediate postpartum period, and an informational VBAC meeting. We also walked in the Dogwood Parade, tabled at the Mamas & More Festival, and hosted the “Healthy Birth, Healthy Baby” Expo.
Priya’s plans for the Charlottesville Chapter in 2015
This coming year we plan to continue our monthly Birth Circles, and many of the same popular Birth Series events we hold each year, such as Comfort Measures, Couples Birth Circle, and the VBAC meeting. We also plan to add a Meet-the Midwives event to the schedule in 2015!
Please consider volunteering for the Charlottesville Chapter! Birth Matters Virginia is a volunteer driven organization that relies on the support and work of many dedicated individuals. Ask Priya how you can help!
